What if we could save the fishing industry and protect the ocean at the same time? Marine ecologist Enric Sala shares his bold plan to safeguard the high seas — some of the last wild places on earth, which fall outside the jurisdiction of any single country — by creating a giant marine reserve that covers two-thirds of the world’s ocean. By protecting the high seas, Sala believes we will restore the ecological, economic and social benefits of the ocean. “When we can align economic needs with conservation, miracles can happen,” Sala says.

Why don’t you put your money & effort behind buying some old trawlers to clean up the massive amounts of floating garbage. Then push for reforms requiring biodegradable nets & other marine equipment, as well as outlawing non-biodegrade plastic bottles & bags. Might actually do some good that way… instead of worthlessly farting your way through something that will NEVER happen.
excellent video and profound speech.
Got to agree but if you notice around the World Us poor people never get to see these great places as were working to hard So it ends up been protected for the rich to visit It is not been selfish it is fact It would end up those that have and those have not AND IT WOULD END UP THE PRIVILEGE FEW once again Why not make these places for every body
Wow ! It’s just awesome .Thank you.
Yes!!!! My grand dad would have said, this is common sense! And it is!
Important message, powerfully presented!
World needs a 1 yr in every decade with FULL fish ban in oceans !!!
If true … good jobs !!!
Things like this make me cry, so inspirational, providing potential hope for our future.
Brilliant
Great idea, this should be done.
Taiwan is not a country, is a part of China.
Fantastic good sir. What can i do to help
Thank you
Get rid of white people and the earth will regenerate herself. Problem solved.
fisher men, stop fishing, so that tourism companies can do their job.
i hope this happens
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

Excellent talk, I think we all need to know about this, to know where our food is coming from and the impact it has on the environment. I love what happened in Cabo Pulmo, I actually think there’s hope, but we have to act quickly.
Is there any way to get in touch with Mr. Sala, this project looks wonderful!
“if our children jumped into the ocean what would they say?”
“Ahh im drowning i never took swimming lessons!”
I looove Nat Geo.
Dear sir, one thing you made mistake- Taiwan is part of China ,is not a Country.
That’s really cool… But people used to eat deep sea fishes…and their are other products we get from fishes…if we make those areas as reserved area then… will there be a demand for those fish products??
you can also stop eating animals to not contribute in this! GO VEGAN!
Exactly!!! Stopping fishing is the answer!!
Good Idea!
However, Far too many people depend on the ocean for basic survival nutrition.
Yes, Wealthy countries “might” survive without that food.
Unfortunately, the poorer countries and their people can not.
– We would need to “reduce” the world’s population for this to work.
It saddens me that TED which used to be the go to place for learning about the bleeding edge of natural sciences has become more focused on humanities and sociology. While this stands in the middle it really can’t be denied that majority of the vidoes and ideas showcased are more about sociology and psychology.
So what can we do as individuals to make this happen?!
Let’s smash plastic. I’m starting a campaign to make my town into a plastic free zone. A small step I know but if we all do our bit, we can make changes.
WOW, AMAZING WORK SIR ^_^/
Fantastic to see over 17000 views in less than 24 Hours. We need to share this video on all platforms and networks.
Awesome WORLD firsts in terms of research and understanding the nuts and bolts of profitibility or lack of profitability of High Sea fishing.
It just doesn’t make sense any way you look at it. Turn those Deep Sea trawlers into deep sea plastic collection liners to protect the ocean from destruction and become part of the solution. Well done to @Enric_Sala and the Team.

LOVE IT!!! Fantastic idea, fantastic talk and now let’s see it get done! The Universities with Marine Biology would be a great place to start. The University of West Florida has an EXCELLENT program!!!
Amazing idea. Love this.
Something must be done
TED talks are starting to feel more like brainwashing sessions, nice
This man needs to get noticed
Very good, but who will control these big reserve areas? Some ONGs, maybe?
This man, quit his job but who funds him and his organisation?
amazing
We fish too much, we agriculture too much, to have too much food, to eat too much, to have too early health problems, to then take too much drugs, and end up dying too early… Why? Because in ALL these stages someone makes too much money, that’s why.
Run this data with the cost of plastic.
Way to go.
if i were ever ruler of the world the first thing i would do is completely halt commercial fishing for a year. i don’t care who you are, if you’re a crab fisherman in Alaska or a salmon fisher in California it would 100% halt for at least a solid year. next thing i would build a national park where absolutely no human interaction is allowed. no scientists (unless necessary) no hikers, nothing. a place where nature could grow with 0% human interaction
So this is also where my tax money goes?! I haven’t the faintest idea that the government would be subsiding this… well crime, that’s what this is!
God, is there any country in the world with a government worthy of our tax money?!
NIce idea,keep thinking big ! !
underrated vid
I’m on board 100%!
thank you !
