Always use a well know bank ATM (Banamex, Banorte, Bancomer, etc) and get pesos! Better exchange rate and lower fees, probably about 2-3 usd. Ask you US bank if they have an agreement with a bank in México. If you pay with credit card, tell them to charge you the amount in pesos and let your bank do the exchange. Many US banks like Capital One, B of A Travel rewards, Citi Costco won’t charge foreign currency fee
You can throw toilet paper into the toilet it’s a popular old belief but does not apply nowadays
